Levels & Levelling

Levels & Levelling

Not all campsite pitches are level, regardless of whether you are wild-camping or parked up somewhere expensive with a full range of facilities. It's nice to have your motorhome level though, for a number of reasons, not least that the water will then find its way down the plugholes exactly as the manaufacturer intended. Even the smallest campervan can be a problem, unless you fancy sleeping with your head below your feet. It's easier with caravans of course, especially those with only a single axle about which to pivot, but even they can be uneven from side to side thus making it more likely that you'll roll out of bed at night.

The solution to this problem, at least in UK & EU, is simple: you drive the low corner/side up onto a small platform to level out your pitch. By varying the height of that platform from side-to-side, or front-to-rear, you can then achieve a level motorcaravan. Carrying bricks and/or blocks of wood to do this, while possible, is both inconvenient and potentially dangerous. Fortunately then manufacturers such as Thule and Fiamma have produced a range of levelling ramps, or levellers, to make the exercise both simple and same. For added safety you can even buy matching chocks to prevent your motorhome rolling back off the ramp while you sleep.

It's sometimes difficult to judge exactly what's level from the driving seat though, and while a spirit level is an option it's by no means convenient, so we also list a number of simple levels that work in two dimensions (fore-aft & side-to-side) to tell you, at a glance from your driving seat. when you're set level.
